The Equation / Jams

A monthly workshop series blending traditional Ugandan dance with urban styles — running since 2012

The Equation is a distinctive dance workshop series organised by Batalo East, focusing on blending traditional Ugandan dances with urban dance styles. Each month, qualified traditional dance teachers and instrumentalists introduce a different Ugandan cultural dance, while a skilled urban dancer guides participants in learning and applying contemporary techniques.

The workshops target the urban dance community and are open to all dancers and interested members of the public, especially youth. Held from 3:00 to 5:30 PM, they give participants the chance to apply new styles and skills in a traditional dance circle, or 'cypher'.

From 2012 to 2020, The Equation was held at the CICP space in the Uganda National Theatre, Kampala, on the last Saturday of every month. Following the Covid-19 pandemic, the workshops now take place at the Batalo East Creative Center in Butaleja and rotate among local dance organisations in Kampala, Mbale and Jinja.

Participants should bring clean footwear, comfortable clothing, and a bottle of water.
