Outreach

Prison and community outreach using dance and hip hop theatre as a method of storytelling.

outreach performance by Batalo East

Batalo East piloted work with prison outreach programming in Uganda in Lira, in coordination with the Lira Peace and Justice Commission.

Batalo East sees outreach work as a complementary and value-added role — collaborating closely with existing youth-focused outreach initiatives to strengthen and enrich their activities, whether through presenting dance and hip hop theatre as a method of storytelling, or introducing traditional-meets-urban activities to challenge young people's interpretation of the role of traditional art in their lives and personal development.

Sisobola Kusa

Sisobola kusa is a Luganda phrase meaning "I can't breathe." The piece was created to reflect the struggles and trials a common man goes through in day-to-day life.

A 30-minute collaborative contemporary art and dance piece featuring Batalo East, it takes the form of an installation using discarded plastic bottles to reflect what people living in poverty experience.
