Batalo Dance Festival

The Batalo Dance Festival is an annual celebration of cultural unity which debuted in 2013 at Lohana Academy school in Kampala, Uganda. This vibrant event attracts over 1,000 young performers from Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and Congo (DRC).

The festival seamlessly blends African culture with urban expression, creating a space that fosters free interaction among people from Uganda and around the world. It promotes unity among diverse clans and tribes while celebrating Uganda's heritage through music, dance, training, and panel discussions.

Held in prominent cultural venues across Uganda, such as the Uganda National Cultural Centre and Ndere Cultural Center, the festival has also featured an online edition in 2020. In its ninth year, 2023, the festival took place at the newly inaugurated Batalo East Creative Center in Kachonga, Butaleja District, bringing together over 102 young performers.

The festival showcases a variety of performances and includes workshops and interactive sessions, offering attendees the chance to engage with both traditional East African dances and contemporary urban styles.

A key focus is nurturing young talent. Through competitions and showcases, emerging dancers gain exposure and receive feedback from experienced professionals. The festival also promotes cultural exchange by inviting international artists to collaborate with local talent.

The Batalo East Dance Festival is not just an artistic event but also a platform for social change, addressing youth empowerment, education, and community development through the transformative power of dance.
